The Dutch government is reorganizing the entire higher education system which also include universities. Due the financial crisis the government has to make cutbacks on its expenses and this means that the universities have to make cutbacks to on their part because they get less income from the government. The goverment is also taking several measures to put more pressure and costs on the students which fall under the Dutch Law. As a foreign or exchange student you might wonder why this is such a hot-topic and what the measures are all about. For those students we will try to make a solid overview.
Langstudeerboete = Long term students fine
The government has inflicted a measure in which students who are studying longer than the nominal amount of time for their study + one year have to pay €3000,- extra tuition fee upon the normal amount of tuition they pay. This means that for bachelor students this means that for their fifth year they have to pay the extra tuition. For master students this would mean in their 3rd year they have to pay extra. The counting of the years studying is cummulative, so with a new study it is not reset to 0 years. For many students this means that switching studies or doing a board year is made more difficult because no delay is allowed. Especially for students who have made such decisions earlier in their student life and are confronted with this measure it is unfair as they are 'punished' for decisions they made when this measure was not present yet.
Harde knip = First finish your entire bachelor before starting your master
The earlier situation in the Netherlands was that students which still had 12 ECTS left on their bachelor program could already start their master education. This was done so that students did not have to 'waste' an entire year for getting 12 ECTS. The government now wants to have more dividence between the bachelor and master phase. They want students to first finish their bachelor and than start their master. On the TiU this measure will be of affect from 1 september 2012.
Leenstelsel masterfase = No more scholarship in master phase.
The goverment wants to implement a loan system for the master phase. Now the students under the Dutch law are eligible for a monthly scholarship from the government during a period of four years as a student (the nominal time of studying). The government now wants a loan system in which students have to loan against low rates and a long payback term instead of getting a monthly scholarship during their master. For students this will affect the way to finance their master.
Cutbacks on TiU
The Tilburg University has to make structural cutbacks of €15 million on personnel, services and activities because of the lower amount of income they get from the government. The first reorganization plan has been accepted, now we will start discussing subjects of efficiency.

If you want to vote click here or go to www.tilburguniversity.edu/elections
Do you get tired of the shortage of workplaces, bad coffee and compulsory lectures? Then this is the time to do something about it - all you have to do is vote for Fractie Front who is campaigning this week. We are a student party that negotiates with the board of the University to improve the University for the students. These improvements as suggested by Fractie Front of course concern more than coffee and workplaces. Last year, for example, Front Fractie has accomplished the establishment of a new caterer on campus and the possibility for students to follow a second Bachelor/Master program at the regular costs as opposed to paying a higher amount of money. In addition, thanks to Fractie Front the reservation system of workplaces in the library will be improved. Front Fractie is also the student party who took action in order to convince the board to increase the number of workplaces at the University. The extra focus of Fractie Front on the ambitious student makes your student life more enjoyable, better and increases your future prospects. In these times of economic cutbacks that certainly affect us students it is important that the interests of the student are well represented. In particular, the interests of ambitious students, who likes to do be active in student life next to his / her study program. Fractie Front is the student party who is devoted to represent the interests of all students and especially the active students. Therefore, I support Fractie Front. Would you do the same?
