Governmental scholarship

The scholarships EER-students receive from the Dutch government on a monthly basis, just like the Dutch students, will change from next year. Students from other countries within the EER now have the right to request a monthly scholarship of €266,- when they work at least 8 hours a week. Halbe Zijlstra of the ministry of education, culture and science now wants these student to work at least 14 hours a week before they can make a request for a scholarship like this. This new policy should be started the next college year. As arguments Zijlstra states that in 2006 the government paid 6 million euros to these students and now the government pays 26 million euros. He says that when Dutch students need to make sacrifices, other EER-students should also contribute to this.

In a reaction to this proposition the Rector Magnificus from Maastricht University says that he regrets this new policy and that this shall have a bad influence on the international position of the Netherlands. Many international students choose Beta-studies which are much needed and that 20% of the international students stays to work and live in the Netherlands after their education. It might also affect the study results of these students as they need to spend much more time working beside their study.
